LES PONTS DE PARIS VUS PAR MARC MIMRAM - An Exhibition at La Maison Française of New York University

37 bridges, one river, centuries of history.

Through this exhibition, Marc Mimram, architect and engineer and designer of the Solférino Footbridge (Léopold Sédar Senghor Footbridge), retraces the history of the 37 bridges spanning the Seine in Paris, with a particular focus on how they were built and on the knowledge and expertise that made them possible.

To look at the bridges of Paris is also to trace the evolution of materials, techniques, and craftsmanship. It is to understand how advances in knowledge, particularly the development of the theory of strength of materials, gradually transformed the way these structures were conceived and built.

These bridges are far more than mere crossings. By connecting the Right Bank and the Left Bank, they tell the story of Paris and its transformation over the centuries. They are an integral part of the Seine’s landscape and form public spaces open to all, where architecture, engineering, and the pleasure of seeing come together.

Among the 37 bridges featured in the exhibition, five landmark bridges have been selected for the way they exemplify particular construction techniques, for their history, or for the knowledge and expertise they embody.

The exhibition thus invites us to see the Seine in a different light: as the matrix of Paris, a river around which the city took shape and whose bridges have, for centuries, shaped both its landscape and the way we experience it.

We are delighted to invite you to discover the exhibition at La Maison Française of NYU, whom we warmly thank for hosting us.

An invitation to see the bridges we cross every day in a new light, not only as witnesses to the history of construction in Paris, but also as places where the city, the river, and the landscape come together.
